Ready-mix or bags? Below roughly one cubic yard, bags are usually cheaper and simpler; above it, ready-mix delivery wins on price and your back. It takes 45 eighty-pound bags to make a single cubic yard, so a 12 × 12 ft slab at 4 inches (1.9 yards with waste) would mean 86 bags — order the truck.

Round forms use cylinder math instead: volume = π × radius² × depth. Per foot of depth, an 8-inch sonotube takes about 0.35 cubic feet (0.6 bags), a 10-inch about 0.55 (0.9 bags), and a 12-inch about 0.79 (1.3 bags). For standard fence posts, plan two 50 lb bags of fast-setting mix per post. Self-leveling underlayment is its own product — a 50 lb bag typically covers 40–50 sq ft at 1/8 inch; check your bag's rating.

cubic yards = (length ft × width ft × thickness in ÷ 12) ÷ 27, + 7% waste

Slab volume converted to cubic yards with a 7% allowance for spillage, uneven subgrade and over-excavation. Bag counts divide the same volume by each bag's yield (0.6 ft³ for 80 lb, 0.45 ft³ for 60 lb) and round up — you cannot buy a fraction of a bag.
